The Importance Of A Working Space

We are often told that to get better and achieve our goals on the guitar we need to practice. To be able to express ourselves through music demands we put in the time. It takes focus and patience to learn that tough lick/phrase/chord changes/solo. That is all true, but something that many of us are not taught is that you make it much harder to achieve all those goals if you do not have the right environment.

In this post, I will talk about the importance of a working space, why it is crucial, and a few tips on creating one.

What Is A Working Space?

Basically, it is a space in your home with everything you need to practice and get the artistic juices flowing. Preferably, it is a space that belongs only to you, and that surrounds you with things that will stimulate and encourage you to play and create music.

Why Is It Important?

Creating a working space dedicated to playing and creating music gives you a chance to relax and be yourself while playing or practicing. Once you get used to the new space, it will feel more and more inviting to sit down, forget all the other things that trouble you at that moment, and get into the music. It will turn into a symbol of focus and creativity that gives you the freedom to be the musician that you can be.

What Do I Need To Create A Working Space?

It is very easy and straightforward to create your own working space. You will need a few basic things like a nice desk to store your computer, notes, and metronome. And a comfy chair to sit on and play. After you have the essential equipment, you can add extra things to your space: a plant to keep you company, a lovely lamp to let you practice later at night, posters that you like, and anything that will encourage and motivate you to practice and create.

My Working Space

In the picture below, I will share with you my working space. It is a simple one, but effective.

It is not always possible or easy to create a working space in our homes. But I highly recommend that you try and make one if you can. It can change the way you look at practicing and creating music. It can motivate and encourage you and give you the environment to be a better guitar player and musician.
